Our special dinner in celebration of “Circle of Promise Day” on Monday, August 1 at 7pm at the Fullerton Community Center was a great success in spreading awareness of both breast health equity issues in the African American community and also the Life and Legacy of Henrietta Lacks. Komen established Circle of Promise Day on August 1, 2015 as a time to bring added awareness to the issue of breast cancer disparities and high mortality rates among African American women. August 1 was chosen because it is the birthday of Henrietta Lacks. It is our goal to decrease disparities and empower African American women to be proactive about their breast health.

At this great event, attendees were addressed by the following Komen Orange County Affiliate staff members.  Lisa Wolter, Executive Director, shared information on Komen as an organization, who we are and what we do. Missions Director, Ambrocia Lopez, briefly addressed disparities in the community and LarLeslie McDaniel, Community Resource Advocate, discussed the Circle of Promise. Dr. Hang Dang, a surgical oncologist from Breastlink OC, also conveyed the message of disparities in the community and the need for early detection. Following the doctor’s presentation, there was a brief time for Q&A, which allowed for better engagement with the ladies.

Earlier in the evening, attendees were shown an 18-minute video on Henrietta Lacks. There was also a “HELA” table that displayed information and pictures of Henrietta Lacks and her family along with handouts that provided more details about her life. Copies of the book, “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” were given away as raffle prizes, along with several other wonderful donated gifts.

Everyone received breast health materials in a folder, along with COP ribbons, commitment forms and general information on COP. They also received a COP luggage tag and pledge card in a small pink pouch. The event was FREE and approximately 100 attendees joined us for a delicious catered dinner and assorted bundtinis from Nothing Bundt Cakes.
